Anything Can Be A Speech Toy

Did you know that supporting your child’s speech and language development through play doesn’t always require toys?

Buying and playing with a new toy with your toddler can feel fun and exciting! However, everyday items that are in your house can be just as therapeutic as buying a new toy for your toddler.

Oftentimes, toddlers are more excited by these everyday items than new toys! From tupperware, to blankets, to light switches and paper towel rolls, you can turn anything into a language-building tool!

For example, a paper towel roll can become:

  • a telescope - “I see” “Where are you?”

  • a shaker - “shake” “my turn” “I do”

  • bowling pins - “knock down” “uh oh” “boom” “crash”

When using everyday items to support your child’s speech and language, be creative and use familiar items. This will make supporting their communication a fun and natural part of your daily routine.

Remember, the most effective way to support your child’s communication skills is through play and interaction, so don’t be afraid to get silly and have fun!

What everyday item do you use in your home to support your little one’s language?
